How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our ancillary texts that we created include a main poster, a front cover of a soap opera magazine, a hyperlinked web-page and two other posters.

Poster
For our main poster we decided to use an image of the character Jafooli. We used him because in our trailer he is only shown once, however he is a major character therefore by creating a poster with only him on it we will be raising awareness of his character. People will also begin to question his character and wonder what is he like, why is he wearing the clothes he is wearing and why is he standing in a certain way etc. The main thing I really like about out poster is how the character is in black and white but his surroundings are in colour. I think that this is extremely effective because the character stands out even more against the background and there are so many different reasons for why he is in black and white. For example it creates the feeling of not fitting in; Jafooli’s character is very different from everyone else’s and he has always felt as if he does not fit in. The photo was taken on school grounds which I think was a good idea as one of the places that our soap opera takes place is in a school; hopefully the audience will pick up on this. Whilst the character is in black and white and the surroundings are in colour, there are only two colours which stand out the most and they are pink and blue. Therefore we decided to focus on these colours by increasing the contrast levels to make them stand out more. We didn’t want to overload on colours therefore for the text we only used the colour black; I think this was a good idea because the text was easy to read wherever we put it and it didn’t clash with anything. The font of the texts we used differed; for the “MONDAY-FRIDAY” part we simply put all the letters in capital size so that it stood out and was easy to read. The font we used was “Verdena”; however we used many different fonts for the “Broadway Park” as we put every single letter in a different font to create an edgy feeling. Overall I think that our poster combines really well with our main product; both our products mention the name of our soap as well as what channels it will be available on. There is also a sense of continuity as we have used one of the characters who appears in the trailer in a school setting.

Soap Opera magazine front cover
For our magazine cover we used the character of Summer on the front cover; from our trailer it is obvious that she is one of the main characters from our soap opera as she constantly pops up. I think that the soap opera magazine combined with our main product is extremely effective as both products use the character of summer therefore our audience will recognise that both products are about the same soap opera. We have made our front cover exciting and interesting to look at by using bright bold colours. We have also incorporated many scandalous storylines which I think is effective as they will make our audience members wonder what storylines our soap will cover. By using images of existing soap operas I think we have made our magazine front cover very realistic looking. We have also advertised on our front cover that our soap is “Brand New” so that we will be able to interest new audience members.

Website
We made sure that our websites were clear and easy to read as we had to include a lot of information. Kanchan used the colour themes of black and red on her website to create a sense of consistency whilst Amanda used the colours pink and black. We both ensured that our websites were easy to navigate around by creating many different pages for each of the different sections. All our texts and fonts are in the same colours and sizes so that there is no confusion and it is easy and clear to read. We included links to our evaluation website, our trailer, our official website, our outtakes website and our Facebook pages.
